GouldHome > Reflections of Sunrise
  (Dec 22, 2004, 07:19am)

On my way back to my car (after taking sunrise pictures from Robbins Farm in Arlington), I took took this picture showing the reflection of the sunrise in the window pane of a nearby school.

This is a real photograph, not a digital creation. I did crop the original picture to just show a close up of the upper-left pane of the window. And the image was rotated and de-skewed slightly. Otherwise, this photograph shows the reflection exactly as it was.

Here is a link to the uncropped original picture.

In mid-December, from Robbins Farm in Arlington, the sunrise is hidden by the dense cluster of building in downtown Boston. This picture, four minutes after official sunrise, shows the sun starting to appear above the buildings.

Before I left home, the satellite showed no cloud cover. However, by sunrise time low clouds had appeared over the ocean. This is a picture of Boston from Robins Farm in Arlington, a few minutes before the sunrise.

Four days later, and I am back at Robins Farm in Arlington. There is no good cloud cover to catch the sunrise so I zoom in close to the city. At this time of year, the sun rises behind the downtown section of Boston.

The sun appears between two buildings of downtown Boston. This was taken from Robins Farm in Arlington.

A week later and the cloud conditions are perfect. Low clouds over the land but nothing over the ocean. This is a picture of Boston a few seconds before the sun appeared over the horizon. Taken from Robins Farm in Arlington.

Sunrise over Boston. As we approach the winter solstice, the sun is moving further and further south. Here I catch it just north of the downtown section of the city. That building closest to the sun is Harbor Towers, a residential building. If you look closely, you can see the rising run shining through the building and lighting up the windows on the southern face.

Be sure to check out the original size (click on the "original" link below the picture), since the size reduced version is not as sharp.
GouldHome > Morning clouds rolling into Boston
  (Dec 06, 2004, 06:55am)

Boston from Robbins Farm in Arlington. The pre-dawn sunlight reflecting off the incoming cloud bank made for a interesting picture while I waited for the sun to rise. I had to zoom out to capture the clouds, so Boston is just a small section of the horizon.
