  • Interior of some Central American country
  (Dec 08, 2005, 11:21am)

For the journey down, I was sitting in a window seat at the back of the plane. So I took the opportunity to take some pictures of the islands we flew over. I ended up deleting most of the airline pictures, but I kept this one because I found it interesting (and clear).

I have no clue what country this is a part of. It may be a Caribbean island, But since it was taken 3 hours out of Guayaquil, its more likely to be part of Central America.

  • Guayaquil, seen during approach to airport
  (Dec 08, 2005, 02:19pm)

We stopped in Guayaquil, Ecuador, to refuel and get processed by customs. This is the only halfway decent picture I was able to salvage from our flight over Guayaquil.

  • Quick refueling in Guayaquil
  (Dec 08, 2005, 02:52pm)

We were on a tight schedule. We had to land in Guayaquil, pass through customs, refuel the plane and take off to get to the Galapagos. The catch is that the plane had to leave the Galapagos no later than 6pm (when the sun sets). So every extra minute spent on the ground in Guayaquil increased the probability that we would have to spend the night on the Equador mainland instead of the Galapagos Islands.

But though the miracle of excellent logistical planning, the stop in Guayaquil went smoothly. One of the key reasons was the fact that the Guayaquil ground crew had the fuel truck (shown in this picture) ready to go as soon as we taxied to the side of thr runway.

  • Island of Balta, north of Santa Cruz
  (Dec 08, 2005, 04:55pm)

The Galapagos main airport is on the island of Balta, which is just north of Santa Cruz. The airport was built by the US military during World War II, but it now serves only civilian duties.

Here is a picture of the northern part of Balta (North is to the upper-left) as we approached for a landing. You can see a few buildings on the coast, but there really is very little on the island except for the airport.

  • Daphne Major and Daphne Minor
  (Dec 08, 2005, 04:58pm)

There are two little islands off the northwest coast of Santa Cruz called Daphne Major and Daphne Minor. Although not the best picture, I just had to have a picture of the islands named after my wife :-).

  • Unloading the plane in record time
  (Dec 08, 2005, 05:19pm)

48 minutes. That was how much time we had to completely unload the plane, people, carry-ons and gear. There was no ground crew, but we all pitched in. Instead of each person worring about his own stuff, everyone just grabbed whatever was close and carried it off the plane. Then we went back to help unload the tail section, which was being used for extra storage.

At the end, the plane was able to take off with 2 minutes to spare.

North American Airlines. Not the biggest name in the industry, but they were our transportation to and from the Galapagos Islands.

  • Path into the Santa Cruz nature sanctuary
  (Dec 09, 2005, 09:31am)

Our first morning activity was to visit the giant tortoises on the nature preserve. We took a bus ride up to the highlights, and then walked the rest of the way on foot.

This is the entrance path to the nature preserve. Needless to say we got very excited when we saw a few giant tortoises ahead on the path. Since these were our first tortoises, we approached slowly and took lots of pictures. (None of which I saved; there were better shots later.)

  (Dec 09, 2005, 10:48am)

The trail was well marked to keep the tourists in their place. We walked for some distance into the reserve before it opened up.

  • Highlands of Santa Cruz under the clouds
  (Dec 09, 2005, 12:49pm)

The first day was cloudy until mid-afternoon. That was good for taking pictures of tortoises (no harsh light) but not for taking pictures of the landscape. I did keep this one picture, showing some of the hills in the interior of Santa Cruz island. This was taken during lunch from the grounds of the Royal Palm Hotel.

  • The intersection just north of Puerto Ayora
  (Dec 09, 2005, 01:26pm)

I did not have any time during the trip to walk around town. So all my pictures of town were taken through the front window of the tour bus as we were shuttled from one place to another.

This is the intersection just north of the main town of Puerto Ayora. There is not much here, and we always turned right (just after the blue truck). Except for the one time that we pulled up a block to visit the bakery.
